Gunnar Nilsson's Cancer Foundation
Gunnar grew up in Helsingborg, Sweden. And it was also there that his mother, Elisabeth Nilsson, in memory of Gunnar, founded Gunnar Nilsson's Cancer Foundation. Her wish was that the foundation should contribute to increasing cancer research and to this end she donated all her assets to the foundation. The foundation was registered in 1979 with the purpose of supporting education and research in the field of battling cancer diseases and to support treatment and care of cancer patients. The board of directors decided that the foundation first and foremost should support clinical and clinically experimental cancer research. Great progress is continually made in cancer research. If medical science, at the time of Gunnar's death, had possessed the knowledge that we now have of cancer, his life could probably have been saved. The mortality rate of the testicular cancer that Gunnar suffered from has today been reduced to 5%. The foundation's board of directors consists of five doctors and cancer experts, one financial and one legal adviser. Chairman of the board is professor Dick Killander at the oncological institution at the University Hospital in Lund.
Every year the foundation donates approx SEK 4 millions to
scientists who have applied for grants.
