Gunnar Nilsson's research unit in the Kamprad building at the University hospital in Lund was opened on Friday 30th September 2005. Four successful research teams symbolically tied their ribbons together during the opening ceremony.
- The physical possibilities are great here in the Kamprad building, for internationally outstanding onkological research. And with this new floor we ensure that the memory of Gunnar Nilsson is kept alive for many generations to come, said professor emeritus Dick Killander, chairman of the board of the foundation.
Gunnar Nilsson's Cancer Foundation has, since its beginning in 1978, paid out many millions Swedish kronor to clinical and clinical experimental cancer research, particularly in southern Sweden.
- We are extremely happy about having been able to manage the capital that Formel-1 driver Gunnar Nilsson's mother left in her will to the foundation, says professor Killander. We distribute approx. SEK 3 millions every year.
This year the foundation has financed the interior of a new research unit in the Kamprad building through a donation of SEK 9 millions. Only a few weeks ago a
so-called Skill Center was opened in the same building, and on Friday 30/9 the last floor was ready to be opened.
Four successful researchers are now moving into the research unit together with their teams: Ingrid Hedenfalk Ph.D. from Malmö, focusing on the hereditary breast cancer within the cancer deceases, professor Kristofer Rubin from Uppsala, concentrating his research on the biochemistry of connective tissue, senior lecturer Mattias Belting MD from Lund, whose team does research on both normal cells' and cancer cells' exchange of information. The oncology department's clinical research unit will also move in with Carsten Rose MD in charge. Professor Bo Baldetorp will be administrator, a position he holds also for the other two cancer research floors in the Kamprad building.
