The Gunnar Nilsson Cancer Foundation

Gunnar Nilsson grew up in Helsingborg, Sweden, and it was there that his mother, Elisabeth Nilsson, in honour of Gunnar, founded the Gunnar Nilsson Cancer foundation. She donated all her assets to the foundation with the wish that it should contribute to increasing cancer research. The foundation was registered in 1979 with the purpose of supporting education and research in the cancer field and to support treatment and care of cancer patients.

Great progress is continually made in cancer research. If medical science, at the time of Gunnar's death, had possessed the present level of knowledge, his life would probably have been saved. The mortality rate of testicular cancer has fallen from 90% to 5%.

The board of directors consists of five doctors and cancer experts, one financial and one legal adviser. Chairman of the board is consultant Martin Malmberg, he works at the hospital in Helsingborg and at the University Hospital in Lund. The Gunnar Nilsson Cancer Foundation annually donates approximately SEK 4 millions to scientists who have applied for grants. Today, the foundation's foremost goal is to support clinical and clinically experimental cancer research.
